Uranium Glass - Collectible that Never Goes Out of Style
Uranium Glass is glassware that has uranium added to it, for coloration. Under the UV light of a black light it glows! But - under normal lighting it's simply light green.
The Uranium (usually in the form of oxide diuranate) is added to the glass mix before melting. It was very popular in North America and Western European countries until the Cold War era when most industrial access to chemicals like uranium were curtailed via legislation. By the 1990s uranium glass housewares were entirely out of production.
The question I am asked most about uranium glass is - is it safe. My answer is probably. 🤣
Like a lot of vintage glassware, which can include things like leaded crystal, my stance is simple: it's probably ok to eat/drink off of but I wouldn't store anything in it long term. (So I wouldn't store whiskey in a vintage crystal or uranium glass decanter, but I may serve whiskey out of it for a party.)
I love this sugar bowl! It's so cool!
